Zeus and Mel have shared puppyhood - we would like to place the two boys together. Zeus and Mel's dad lost his home and, consequently, the boys lost theirs. We have great respect for shelter workers and volunteers who often see one of their favorite dogs led back to the euthanasia room because an owner never showed up and Rescues for the breed aren't available. This was the case with Rodger. He was a favorite at the shelter. He made everyone laugh by snoozing contentedly upside down with all four feet in the air. He gave everyone happy grins in the mornings and he never complained about the food. DJ is a Wirehaired Pointing Griffon, a rather rare breed in Southern CA - and he is a delight. Well-behaved, well-house-trained, personable and affectionate. DJ has been a well-cared for companion. His family had him professionally groomed prior to his release to a San Diego shelter - they obviously loved him and wanted others to recognize how extraordinary he is. Buck came in recently from a San Diego shelter with a neglected skin condition, one of the worst we've seen. This is Demodex, non-contagious, and generally caused by a shaky immune system. Many believe multiple vaccines to be a partial cause. If you look at Obie's bio on our website (www.friendsforpets.org) and his current photos, you'll see that healing is probable with the correct medical intervention. Buck is feeling much better, his wounds are scabbing, and, in time, he'll be quite handsome. Vince came to us from a San Diego shelter. He arrived there in poor condition with bite wounds around his neck, face and legs. Because he was also emaciated, the shelter held him for a longer period to determine that he was basically healthy. Vince is slowly gaining weight - he's currently 57 lbs and should be at least 10 pounds heavier. He's a boy who has had very little care who will need patience, understanding, and encouragement. (Update: Chloe has been placed. Annie is still waiting for the perfect home.) Our friend, adopter, supporter passed away in his sleep earlier this week. His two long-ago adopted Weims are back with us. Annie is 12; Chloe is 8. The girls have been exceptionally well-cared-for. For months, their dad has said he didn't know what he would do without them, that they gave him the strength to continue. Now, we hope to find a home for the girls that their dad would approve of. Hunter recently was released by owner. Several days later, he went into full torsion. He was at the vet within minutes and on the surgery table within 20 minutes, Thanks to quick action and our capable vet who's well-aware that torsion leads to death within minutes, Hunter survived! When Sheba was recently taken in the car with her family, she surely didn't realize that it would be their last time together. The car pulled over on the Indio freeway, the back door was opened, and Sheba, with leash attached, was pushed out. Fortunately, another driver, close behind, saw the incident, pulled over and saved Sheba from oncoming traffic. Sheba has received veterinary care (she was flea-infested) and has bonded tightly to her new friends who interceded for her.
